Symptoms of oral thrush include the following:
- White, slightly raised areas on the tongue, inner cheeks, roof of mouth, gums, tonsils, or back of throat
- Raised spots resembling cottage cheese
- Cracking and redness at the corners of the mouth (angular cheilitis)
- A cottony sensation
- Loss of taste
What causes oral thrush?
Thrush is caused by an overgrowth of the candida fungus which is normally present in small amounts in your mouth, digestive tract, and skin, and kept in balance by other bacteria in the body. However, certain illnesses or medications such as corticosteroids or antibiotics can disrupt the balance, leading to an overgrowth of the fungus and causing thrush.
How does Daktarin Oral Gel help treat oral thrush?
Miconazole, the active ingredient in Daktarin, treats oral thrush by killing the candida fungus which causes the infection, easing symptoms such as redness, soreness, and discomfort in the mouth.

Ingredients
- Active: Miconazole 20 mg per 1 g gel
- Excipients include:
- Glycerol
- Ethanol
- Carbomera
- Polysorbate 20 (E432)
- Saccharin sodium (E954)
- Sodium hydroxide
- Flavourings: cocoa (contains ethanol, benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate), orange
- Water
Usage and Instructions
- Apply directly to affected areas after meals
- Do not swallow whole gel mass
- Continue 7 days after symptoms clear
- Do not exceed stated dose
Warnings
- Not for infants under 4 months (choking risk)
- Apply at front of mouth for infants and those with swallowing problems
- Talk to a doctor if:
- Taking warfarin or other anticoagulants
- Taking certain medicines: oral antidiabetics, HIV protease inhibitors, immunosuppressants, some epilepsy medicines, statins, calcium channel blockers, benzodiazepines, ergot alkaloids
- Liver dysfunction
- Pregnant or breastfeeding
- Do not use if allergic to miconazole or similar antifungals
- Avoid if severe dental or oral irritation occurs
Side Effects
- Common: nausea, vomiting, unpleasant taste
- Possible: dry mouth, mouth irritation
- Unknown frequency: allergic reactions (face, lips, tongue swelling, breathing difficulty), liver inflammation, choking in infants, drug interactions causing bleeding with warfarin
